Meet Coach Dean Smith

About Me

I am a California native, husband of 42 years, father of three adult children and grandfather to four.

I am the former pastor and co-founder of The Highway Community, a non-denominational church in Mountain View, California.

My 40 years of pastoral work provided a unique set of leadership and entrepreneurial experiences, including starting a new church, starting a video production company, owning and operating a third wave coffee shop, leading a Board of Directors, managing staff and overseeing their professional development, building and leading volunteer teams, and creating communities of hospitality and belonging.

I am a pastor at heart, seeking to enhance the lives and skills of those around me. I have a degree in psychology and deep interest in human development, which influenced my decision to become a professional coach. My greatest joy and honor is being present with people during life’s most significant moments—transitions, crisis, disappointment, decision—providing a stable presence, perspective and support.

Coaching is a space for you to feel seen, heard and understood. I love sharing tools, life experiences, and practices that enable courageous, centered living.

Currently, I am the director of the Thinking Bench Foundation, a private non-profit focused on the intersection of science and faith. My wife and I recently moved to Corralitos, CA near Santa Cruz, CA, to be closer to family. I have numerous hobbies and interests, including playing guitar, ambient music, playing golf all over the world, the Los Angeles Dodgers and enjoying idiosyncratic little dogs, Dachshunds. In fact, I organized and led the Highway WienerNationals Dachshund race for 17 years in the Bay Area.

My Coaching Journey

After retiring from nearly 40 years of pastoral ministry in 2021, I sought a way to invest my experience, talents and heart in the lives of others. Since I had no idea how to transition, I hired a coach to guide me through a six-month process. That journey had a profound and indelible impact. I discovered new levels of self-awareness, and gained a new perspective on my personal and professional relationships. I enrolled in coaching classes and soon learned the power of collaboration through empowering questions that deepen learning and accelerate growth. I’ve discovered that the coaching process allows me to step aside and partner with a person as they explore challenges and embrace change that maximizes their potential. Whether working through a crisis, transition or decision, I’ve found that coaching is more effective than the counseling and consulting I’ve done in the past. The client owns their decision as the coach guides them from where they are to where they want to be.
